I am not sure I'm able to recall particularly if age had precedence around gender or vice versa. There would needless to say be exceptions, e.g. if a person was sufficiently crucial, they might be preceded by a herald who would announce them; It could be pretty distinct the herald was acting on behalf of the VIP, and never on his individual behalf.
